Broughton Parish Choir

Broughton Parish is blessed by the most wonderful and dedicated traditional robed choir of boys and men who sing to an exceptionally high standard and have a very broad repertoire of choral music both ancient and modern.

Since the 1930s there has been a significant choir in the parish church, which consists of boys and men who are trained in the Royal School of Church Music tradition. The choir is directed by John Catterall, MBE, LRAM, Associate of the RSCM.

The Choir sings the two principal services in the ancient Parish Church of St John Baptist, Broughton at 11.00 am and 6.30 pm on most Sundays of the year.

Tours to the Isle of Man and to France feature regularly in the Choir’s annual programme, as well as visits to cathedrals and churches in the UK.

But it’s not all work! Choristers and their families have great fun together at the cricket and football matches, sports afternoons, BBQs and the summer trip to the seaside and Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

Ladies & Girls Choir

Broughton Parish Girls’ Choir was launched in March 2022. With the choir changing to include ladies in Summer 2024. The choir brings together girls between the ages of 7 and 16 from schools around Preston, with ladies from the parish, to sing for services at St Martin’s Chapel every other Sunday morning during term-time. In addition to their Sunday commitments, the girls receive free tuition in vocal technique and music theory and piano lessons are available at a subsidised rate. If you know a girl who is keen to learn new skills, sing to a high standard and make lots of new friends while enjoying a fun programme of social events and activities, membership of our Girls’ Choir could be for her.

Bell Ringers

The bells at St John Baptist are rung on Sundays 10.30am to 11.00am and 6.00pm to 6.30pm Practices are on Mondays 7.30pm to 9pm.

The bells can be rung for Weddings and Funerals on request.

Bell ringing is a challenging and rewarding team activity. In learning to ring, you will become part of a large group of friends, start a life long learning experience and maintain a traditional craft.

JIGSAW

Jesus Is Great, Super And Wonderful (Sunday School)

Through fun, stories and crafts, children will come to experience the love of God and to understand that Jesus Is Great, Super And Wonderful and with him by your side you will never feel lost or alone.

JIGSAW classes run most Sundays during term time at 9.30am at St Peter’s and 11am at St John’s. At the end of their lesson, the children are brought into the service to share what they have been doing and learning.

Messy Church

Messy church is a form of church for children and adults that involves creativity, celebration and hospitality. It’s a church for people at all stages of their faith journey at any age.

There is a warm welcome, crafts exploring a biblical theme (usually messy), celebration time with a short story, prayer, songs and games, then everyone sits down to a meal together. Our aim is to introduce Jesus, to give an opportunity to encounter him and to grow closer to him.

Warm Welcome Space

We have joined the Warm Welcome Spaces Campaign.

We are open all year!

The dark evenings and cold winter months can be challenging for everyone. The winter is especially tough on people who feel lonely and isolated, and for anyone who can’t afford to heat their homes or get enough to eat.

We are here to help, offering you a warm, welcoming, free and safe space in your community to keep warm, connect, and make new friends.

We will offer free warm brews, hot food, device charging, wifi, games, jigsaws, movies or just a quiet space.

Many people visiting Warm Spaces like ours say what they love about it is the opportunity to make new friends and connect with their community. They come in for the warmth, stay for the welcome, and leave with a smile on their face.

Our Warm Welcome Space will be open EVERY Thursday, 11am-3pm, at St Martin’s Parish Hall, Broadway, Fulwood. PR2 9TH.

Church Cottage

Church Cottage Museum presents a rich and unique learning resource depicting life through the last 450 years, and is open to the Public on Sunday afternoons from 14.00 pm to 17.00 pm, except for Easter Sunday and during December when it is closed for conservation repairs.

There is a modest charge for admission of £ 2.00, but children are admitted free. Admission includes the services of a personal History Guide.

Other Private visits can be arranged by prior appointment, e.g. Womens’ Institutes, Clubs, History Societies, U3A, etc.
