Baptisms

Baptism or Christening marks the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest of our lives, the first step in response to God’s love. For all involved, particularly the candidates but also parents, godparents and sponsors, it is a joyful moment when we rejoice in what God has done for us in Christ, making serious promises and declaring the faith. The wider community of the local church and friends welcome the new Christian, promising support and prayer for the future. Hearing and doing these things provides an opportunity to remember our own baptism and reflect on the progress made on that journey, which is now to be shared with this new member of the Church.

St John Baptist Parish, Broughton welcomes, supports and encourages family life within the parish. Part of this is to welcome people of all ages into the life of faith and into the family of the Church through Baptism. We believe that Baptism is an essential step an individual’s faith journey and we will do all we can within the parish to support and make this journey possible, fruitful, life-giving and lasting.

Confirmation

Confirmation and Holy Communion Preparation is open to young parishioners who have been baptised and are in Year 6 and above. Don’t worry if you haven’t been baptised, please still get in touch.

The next preparation course will begin in late February.

Application Forms will be available at Broughton CofE Primary School and St Peter’s CofE Primary school in January and in the worship centres.

Weddings

A wedding at St John Baptist is an unforgettable day, not only for the bride and groom, but for family and friends too.

St John’s is a beautiful church, located to the north of Preston and serving the rural village of Broughton and the suburb of Fulwood and within close proximity of some superb wedding venues

Funerals

Pastoral care is important to our parish. Clergy are available for funeral services in the parish church and/or the Preston Crematorium.

Interment of Ashes

There is the opportunity for you to have the ashes of your loved one interred in the Ian White memorial garden, in one of the 12 segments of the garden according to the month you select; this could be the month they passed, their birthday or their favourite month. A short service takes place when the ashes are interred into their final resting place. The service includes a very short reading from the bible, silent reflection in which we hold before God our memories of those who have died and some simple prayers.

Appropriate plants are contained in areas that allow for the burial of ashes. Benches are provided for meditation and prayer in this tranquil corner of the churchyard. For more information, please see our Interment of ashes booklet.

Churchyard

St John Baptist Parish Church is a beautiful church with a lovely well-maintained churchyard. For hundreds of years to the present day it has provided a place for Christian burials. In the tranquillity and beauty of this sacred space, the earthly remains of those treasured by our community are laid to rest in peace.

The Churchyard at St John’s is closed, this means that there is no space for any new plots. However, there may be some space in Family Graves for either a burial or an interment of ashes.

Churchyard regulations are to help make sure that the grounds are a place of peace and beauty for everyone to enjoy and to bring dignity and respect for the departed. Blackburn Diocese has a responsibility to make sure that the churchyard remains an appropriate setting to the parish church for years to come.
