St John Baptist Parish Church

The Parish of Broughton-in-Amounderness St John Baptist serves the rural area surrounding the village of Broughton and the suburb of Fulwood. 

The Parish Church provides more traditional services with the Book of Common Prayer service, Holy Communion, and Choral evensong, which is sung by the voices of the men and boys of Broughton Choir. 

Our JIGSAW Sunday School, in the Old School Hall, welcomes our young ones to learn about the teachings of Jesus.

The Bell Ringers announce services and important events around the parish, such as Weddings and Funerals.

St John’s is also used by Broughton Primary school for weekly worship and special events.

Concerts, organ recitals, visiting choirs and bell ringers, heritage weekends, remembrance displays, special services, baptisms, weddings and funerals take place at St John’s, all adding to the rich history of the parish.

The parish church’s history began in the 12th century or before as a family chapel for the Lord of the Manor. The oldest part of the church is the tower dating from 1533 when Henry VIII was on the throne. The building has evolved from a wooden structure to a stone building remodelled numerous times over the centuries. The present nave was built in 1826 and the chancel added in 1906.
It is possible to read much of the history of the parish and its people through the memorials, stained glass, and furniture within the church and the gravestones and ancient cottage in its grounds.

St Peter’s Chapel

St Peter’s Chapel is located in St Peter’s Church of England Primary School in Fulwood and has more of a family style service, with a thriving JIGSAW Sunday School and refreshments after the service. Broughton Girls Choir lead the congregation with more modern hymns.

Messy Church is held in the school hall once a month, learning the teachings of Jesus through crafts, stories and food.

One Parish

Although Broughton St. John Baptist Parish has multiple worship centres, we are one parish and see ourselves as one church community. Joint services, festivals, shows, fairs, parties and concerts involve people from all parts of the parish.

St Martin’s Chapel and Parish Hall

St Martin’s Chapel and Parish Hall is a brand new complex in the heart of Fulwood, it was opened by Bishop Phillip on 10th September 2023.

 

Offering a place of worship & fellowship on Sunday and Thursday mornings. 

Bible study groups, knit & natter, parish events and social nights take place in the centre and it is a Warm Welcome Space all year round, every Thursday from 11-3pm, offering free refreshments, homemade soups, games and company.

It is also home to the Parish office, where a warm welcome is given and information is sought.

The space is used by the community, as well as the parish.
